Knicks Outlook After Free Agency

If you look at who the Knicks have signed, it is clear that they are not only adding talent in positions of need and considering what kind of people these players are, but they are emphasizing height and length. This is another reason why RJ is going to play the 2 and Knox the 3. The Knicks are going to match up with a height advantage and what should be a rebound advantage every night. To quote Kawhi Leonard, the “board man gets paid”. The Knicks have assembled a group of young guys that appear to fit really well together on and off the court and they are tremendously talented too. This seems to be evident by their early creation of a group chat and several members of the team consistently working out and scrimmaging together. I really like what they have done to the bench and the additions of Randle and Barrett/Morris will be great for the starting lineup. This team is going to have size advantages across the board and a lot of athleticism. Even if this Knicks team doesn’t win a lot of games next season, they will be a fun team to watch play and grow every night.

A likely starting lineup of Dennis Smith Jr., RJ Barrett/Marcus Morris, Kevin Knox, Julius Randle, and Mitchell Robinson should be able to stay competitive. Their bench is incredibly deep and better than most teams being led by Barrett/Morris, Bobby Portis Jr., Alonzo Trier, and the rest of the crew. It will be hard for Coach Fizdale to find minutes for everyone so the rotation may change nightly or some of these players may play very little.

With Frank Ntlikina’s emergence in international play this past week, Fizdale may incorporate some 3 guard lineups off of the bench with Trier, Payton, and Ntlikina playing next to most likely Morris and Portis Jr. As of now it seems likely Frank Ntlikina, Damyean Dotson, Wayne Ellington, Ignas Brazdeikis, and Taj Gibson will be fighting to get into the rotation come opening night. Also, with the Knicks backing away from Kris Wilkes’ 2 way contract due to medical reasons, it looks like Kadeem Allen and Kenny Wooten Jr. will be the 2 2-way contracts for now on the Knicks.

  1. I loved how you spoke about the size and strength of the team. It shows that you know a lot about what the Knicks are doing. I am interested to see if there starting lineup is going to be the same as yours. I would have wanted to see more about Barrett because he is there biggest new member of the team.
